New Delhi, 5th March, 2012
Dr. A. Sakthivel, Chairman AEPC in his letter to Shri Anand Sharma, Hon'ble Union Minister of Commerce, Industry & Textiles, Government of India has welcomed the decision by which export of cotton have been prohibited w.e.f. 5th March, 2012 till further notice.
While 1 kg. of raw cotton provides a yield of Rs.100, same cotton as trousers provides a yield of Rs.500. The employment level at raw cotton level is 0.5 worker per kg, however, as garments, 60 lakh workers get jobs. Therefore, finished goods production offers maximum potential for employment.
Due to increased business activities, the State Governments also collect higher taxes on input materials and Central Government also collects higher direct & indirect taxes.
The garment export in the period of April, 2011 to January, 2012 have registered an export of US$10858 million with a growth of 21.45% .The supply of the important raw material cotton would, therefore, be adequately met after this good step taken by the Government.
